Hülkenberg, now in his third year with the team, acknowledged his disappointment with Renault’s setbacks this season. The team suffered reliability problems early on and have struggled to move clear of the midfield or close the gap to the sport’s leading three teams.

“I think it’s fair to say that so far this season we can’t be entirely happy with what we have achieved,” Hülkenberg said at the FIA press conference.

“To start with we had a lot of issues and missed out on results. More disappointing, though, is where we are in terms of pace and development rate — it’s not where we needed or wanted it to be.

“We’re behind expectations this year, so overall we’re not entirely happy. Looking back over the three years, we can’t be entirely satisfied with everything we’ve done.”

Despite the frustrations, Hülkenberg remains optimistic about Renault’s future and his prospects of staying alongside team-mate Daniel Ricciardo next year.

“The outlook is good. We still see light at the end of the tunnel and believe we can make progress and close some of the gap, although it’s hard to say by how much with absolute certainty.

“We’ll see what happens in the future and what happens with my own situation. At the moment nothing is set in stone, but I think it’s quite likely that I will remain with the team.”
