Welcome to Thursday’s edition of the RaceFans round-up, where we gather the day’s most notable comments, social posts and historical moments from the world of motorsport. This edition highlights a lively discussion about the quality of Formula 1 racing this season, shares several relevant links and embeds, and marks notable anniversaries in racing history.
Comment of the day
Has the standard of racing in Formula 1 improved since the start of the year – and has that been down to the changes to the rules, the nature of the recent tracks, or a combination of factors?
Early criticism of the season was widespread, and while I still think there are areas that could be improved, the races since those opening rounds have felt far more competitive and entertaining. The on-track action seems less artificial than it did at first, championship battles are opening up, and many events have produced genuine drama and excitement. There are occasional moments that make me wince, for example when engine revs drop toward the end of a straight, but overall the cars are following and fighting better than they were, and they don’t look as ungainly on track as they once did. Those are reasonable trade-offs in my view.
Formula 1 is rarely perfect, and changes will always provoke debate, but I’m enjoying the season much more than I expected after the first few races.

2026 Austrian Grand Prix Preview (FIA)
The preview notes several track and pit lane changes for the Austrian Grand Prix, including adjustments to the pit wall, relocation of pit exit lights and speed limit signage, and the addition of new garages. As a result of these works, the pit entry speed control line will be moved earlier than in previous years. These practical modifications aim to improve safety and the flow of pit operations during the race weekend.
Pirelli plans to get more aggressive with F1 tyre options (Racer)
Pirelli’s motorsport team is adjusting tyre allocations to encourage more strategic variety. After observing a mix of two- and three-stop races in hot conditions, the supplier has revised its approach for the remainder of the season to provide softer compounds more frequently, which should create more tactical variation between teams.
Fifa urged to drop Saudi oil giant Aramco as activists target World Cup (The Guardian)
Activists are pressuring FIFA to end its sponsorship deal with Saudi Aramco, a major energy sponsor of this year’s tournament. Critics argue that the partnership presents a conflict with public health and environmental priorities, and they point to the wider debate around fossil fuel sponsorship in major sporting events.
(Manufacturers): 2030 regs framework ‘exactly what we need’ (Sportscar365)
Industry perspectives suggest the 2030 regulations offer a sensible pathway for manufacturers. Several brands indicate they would continue with constructor-supplied chassis and established hybrid solutions, while others in the Le Mans Hypercar space would maintain bespoke programs tailored to endurance racing’s unique demands.
