Comment of the day
Pirelli choosing softer compounds for upcoming races? Roger shares a familiar and thoughtful warning:
So the Pirelli cycle of yo-yoing between more aggressive compound choices and more durable choices continues.
This will follow the same pattern as before. The supplier moves toward more aggressive compounds after a race shows higher-than-expected tyre degradation, but that reaction overlooks the fact that what made that race interesting was the unexpected and less predictable nature of the degradation.
Once teams know degradation will be higher, they recalibrate strategy and place greater emphasis on tyre management. That shifts the sport into a phase where extreme tyre conservation becomes the norm, with drivers deliberately managing pace to preserve the tyres and then complaining about how far below optimal lap time they must run.
Fans eventually grow frustrated when tyre management becomes excessive, and when compound choices create tyre-related problems in certain situations. The inevitable response is a return to more conservative tyre choices.
Using tyres as a gimmick to force additional pit stops has never worked in the long term. It produces negative side effects that alienate fans and ultimately forces organisers and suppliers to rethink their approach. I expect the same cycle to repeat now.

- Born today in 1955: Philippe Streiff. Streiff achieved a memorable podium in his sixth Formula 1 start at Adelaide in 1985. His career was later cut short by a severe crash that left him paralysed; he passed away in 2022. His story remains part of F1 history and a reminder of the risks drivers face.
- 15 years ago today Sebastian Vettel dominated the European Grand Prix at Valencia. Vettel’s commanding performance in that race is one of several highlights in his early championship years and a notable moment in the sport’s more recent history.
