Comment of the day
How close is Lewis Hamilton to returning to peak form in his second season with Ferrari, and how much of his improvement is shaped by Charles Leclerc’s recent difficulties?
The perspective here is that Hamilton’s recent performances look stronger largely because Leclerc has endured a dip in form. The Canadian weekend was excellent for Hamilton; Leclerc reported brake problems there, and braking performance is crucial at that circuit. In qualifying the margins between them were tiny, under a tenth, and Leclerc adjusted his setup for the race. Across the next two rounds there were several incidents: in four competitive sessions Leclerc hit the barrier three times. Where they were truly comparable, Leclerc led in Monaco and in Q2 in Spain.
None of that diminishes what Hamilton has done. The team updates have clearly been effective, his driving is sharp and his race pace has been impressive. Still, it’s premature to declare “Lewis is back” and forecast an immediate title charge until we see how Leclerc responds. Hamilton being in good form is excellent for the sport, and if he chooses to finish his career on a high, it will be deserved rather than the result of a brief resurgence while rivals struggle. This recent victory is a moment to savour — it stopped a run of poor results and should be celebrated on its own merit rather than being seen as definitive proof of an unstoppable comeback.
