Lewis Hamilton admitted he had doubted whether he would ever win a grand prix for Ferrari after claiming his first race victory for the team today.

The 41-year-old secured his first grand prix win in nearly two years since moving to Ferrari last season.

While Hamilton won a sprint race in only his second weekend with the team last year, he failed to reach the podium in a grand prix throughout that season. He said there were times he wondered if a long-awaited victory in the red car would ever arrive.

“I have to say a huge ‘grazie’ to everyone here — Ferrari, everyone back at the factory, and Fred [Vasseur] for believing in me and bringing me to this team,” Hamilton said. “When I started out it felt like a dream that was almost impossible, especially after last year.

“But we never gave up hope. The team kept lifting me up, we made many changes and big improvements, and on top of that I have the greatest fan base a sportsman could ever ask for. Thank you to everybody.”

Hamilton’s victory is the 106th grand prix win of his career, extending his own record for most wins. “They were all special in their own way, but this one’s something else,” he added.

“I used to watch Ferrari’s success on TV when I was younger, and whenever I raced here I would look at the screens and wonder what it would be like to win in that car.

“Now it’s happened. Everyone worked so hard for it and truly deserves it, so I am forever grateful. I hope this is the first of many. We had excellent pit stops today, the strategy was spot on, and the car felt fantastic. Forza Ferrari!”
