Red Bull Surpasses Expectations in Catalunya, Says Hadjar

Welcome to Monday’s edition of the RaceFans round-up.

Comment of the day

A welcome first comment from A370RK on Lewis Hamilton’s first grand prix victory as a Ferrari driver:

I’ve read F1 news here for years but never commented. I watched long before Hamilton began racing.

I’m genuinely happy to have witnessed this. Moments like this are what make F1 special. Many believed Hamilton was finished and was only occupying a seat unnecessarily. I even thought that at times. But this performance? It’s difficult to find the right words. I’ve seen Hamilton deliver masterclasses in already great cars over the last decade, but this one tops them all for me because of the story it tells. It’s an epic — the kind of tale that would earn ballads in older times.

His first Ferrari win, after being shown the door and with a widespread view that his career was over, brings a smile. I’m older, and I’ve watched the Disney-Pixar Cars movie with my kids — Hudson Hornet says he had more to give but was turned away. Hamilton may not be young, but I’m glad he has bounced back this year so strongly.

Will he get an eighth title? I don’t know. I’ve never been his biggest fan, but I’m truly happy to have seen this performance. It could go down as one of the greatest races ever — an absolute masterclass. He knows how to drive, he has the experience, and he even made Ferrari’s strategy work. Legendary.

Hear from the team in Barcelona (Red Bull)

Isack Hadjar: “We did way better than we expected this weekend considering the track layout and the conditions. To be fair it was kind of damage limitation. At the Red Bull Ring we expect to have a stronger car and a better track for us.”

Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix: Race recap (Haas)

Ayao Komatsu: “If you look at part of the race where Ollie was on the hard tyre, his pace was decent, but from day one this weekend we didn’t operate at the level we should be operating at and that has had a knock-on effect into today. In the race, communication wasn’t good enough. Yes, the car needs to be improved and be faster, but we’re not getting the best out of it.”

Report: A tough Barcelona-Catalunya GP (Williams)

Alexander Albon: “We were already struggling in the race before the camera issue – the tyre degradation in this heat was really hurting us, and there’s something deeper going on with the car that we need to get to the bottom of. When we had to pit to fix the camera, we used the time to make some changes and got back out there, but at that point it had become a testing session.”

Hamilton paints Barcelona red (Ferrari)

Frederic Vasseur: “From lap one, we knew tyre management would be the key and in that respect Lewis did a fantastic job all race long. He was in control of the situation, pushing when we asked him to. Our strategy was aggressive but that is what you can afford to do when you have the pace for the win.”

Feature Race: Camara wins strategic Barcelona battle for maiden F2 victory (F2)

Rafael Camara secured his first FIA Formula 2 win with a well-judged drive to the top step. The Invicta Racing driver extended his first stint longer than his rivals and used tyre strategy in the final stint to come back through and take victory. Nikola Tsolov took second and the Championship lead, while Alexander Dunne completed the podium.

Feature race: Nael takes dominant lights-to-flag victory in Barcelona (Formula 3)

The Campos Racing driver kept the lead from pole, resisted pressure from Van Amersfoort Racing’s Hiyu Yamakoshi, and took victory, with teammate Ugo Ugochukwu rounding out the podium in third.

Not wishing to harp on about it but it rams home how irrelevant and inconsequential sprint races are that Hamilton’s first proper win in F1 for Ferrari is being celebrated so enthusiastically and the fact he’s technically already won for them is being ignored. #F1 #BarcelonaCatalunyaGP #RaceFans
