Today, reader An Sionnach presents a passionate and detailed argument for Mick Schumacher’s potential return to the Formula 1 grid, drawing comparisons with current drivers and discussing the challenges faced by young talent in the sport.
Mick Schumacher’s potential is significantly underestimated when compared to drivers like Logan Sargeant. In 2021, he recorded only one retirement due to a driver error in Saudi Arabia. The 2022 season saw two races compromised by errors, including another incident in Saudi Arabia where he hit the wall hard during qualifying after taking too much kerb. Additionally, there was the unfortunate practice crash in Japan, mirroring an error he made in wet conditions in Monaco. Despite these setbacks, Mick finished ahead of Kevin Magnussen in 13 out of 22 races during their time as teammates, with Magnussen finishing ahead eight times (and both failing to finish once). Magnussen’s four DNFs included only one driver-induced error (in France), and his fifth-place finish in the season’s opening race largely accounted for their significant points differential.
Initially, I believed Mick deserved another opportunity, but that Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman should be prioritized. However, my assessment regarding Bearman might have been premature, given his involvement in only a single race. That said, it was precisely the kind of challenging race that Mick himself struggled with, and Bearman performed admirably under pressure from seasoned drivers like Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton β a truly significant achievement!
The current predicament is Sargeant’s continued presence on the grid. I believe his time in F1 should conclude more organically than Mick’s did. Franz Tost’s assertion that new drivers require three years to develop, given the current limitations on testing, seems a fair guideline. Yet, in Sargeant’s specific case, his debut year was so challenging that if his second year follows a similar trajectory, two seasons might be sufficient for a definitive evaluation.
Optimistically, Lawson, Bearman, and Mick could all find their way back to the grid next year. There are enough drivers currently underperforming or treading water that this scenario should be a real possibility. The primary obstacle remains that two drivers, Lance Stroll and Yuki Tsunoda, appear to be in effectively unfireable positions. While five other drivers might be feeling the pressure, I genuinely believe they all possess the inherent capacity to deliver strong performances consistently.
