Formula 1 Confirms Record 22-Race 2020 Calendar

The 2020 F1 calendar has been revealed, featuring a record 22 races for the season.

The schedule adds two new rounds in Vietnam and the Netherlands, while only Germany’s event at Hockenheim has been dropped. With that change the championship reaches an all-time high number of races.

The season begins in Melbourne on March 15 and immediately moves to Bahrain the following weekend. Within the opening months the two new events make their debuts: Vietnam and the Netherlands.

Formula 1 will visit Hanoi for the Vietnam Grand Prix on April 5. The championship then returns to Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix on May 3, marking the circuit’s first F1 race in 35 years. That weekend kicks off the European portion of the season before the field heads to Spain a week later, with the Circuit de Catalunya having secured a short, one-year extension to remain on the calendar.

The Azerbaijan and Canadian Grands Prix are scheduled on consecutive weekends, creating one of the most logistically demanding back-to-back stints of the year. As in the past season, other consecutive weekend pairs include Spa and Monza, Singapore and Sochi, and Austin and Mexico City.

Italy’s round is listed as “subject to contract.” The calendar also requires formal approval from the World Motor Sport Council, since the Sporting Regulations currently limit the season to a maximum of 21 races and must be amended to allow 22.
