Alpine Requests Review Hearing After Penalty Cost Gasly P3

Alpine has asked the FIA to review the pit lane speeding penalties that cost Pierre Gasly third place in the Monaco Grand Prix.

“After the result of today’s Monaco Grand Prix, BWT Alpine Formula 1 Team can confirm it has requested a Right of Review from the FIA following the penalties applied for pit lane speeding,” the team said in a statement.

Gasly described the outcome as “heartbroken.”

“I don’t have the words,” he told Sky. “I have too much emotions to process.”

“I just can’t get my head around what happened. It just doesn’t sound fair.”

Gasly said he and the team had checked the car settings and that he activated the pit limiter well before the pit lane line on both occasions.

He was one of five drivers penalised for exceeding the pit lane speed limit during the race and the only driver penalised twice. On the first occasion he was recorded 0.1 kph over the limit; on the second he was 0.4 kph over.

Gasly said he was “200% sure” he had not exceeded the pit lane speed limit on either occasion. “I know I haven’t done anything wrong,” he added.

Missing the podium denied both Gasly and Alpine their first top-three finish since the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix.

“We worked so hard for this moment,” he said. “In 10 years of racing I try to grab every opportunity. Five podiums in my career is not many, and we crossed the line in third position in front of all the French fans, and it gets taken away from us. Right now I just don’t know what to say.”

Gasly appeared unaware of the penalty when he crossed the finish line. He initially celebrated, shouting “P3!” and punching the air, before being told “wait, wait” by his race engineer.

Any further communications between them were not broadcast. Although Gasly kept his arms raised during much of his in-lap, he did not stop at the ‘P3’ board when he returned to the pit lane.

The two Alpine drivers accounted for half of the six pit lane speeding penalties issued. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ George Russell also received penalties. Russell has suggested a “software problem” might be responsible and visited the stewards during the red flag suspension to discuss the issue.

On his return to the pits, Gasly also had a close call with Lewis Hamilton. Arriving at Massenet at speed, he had to decelerate rapidly to avoid contact with the Ferrari.

F1 Right of Review requests since 2019

The most recent team to request a Right of Review hearing before this was Williams following the Dutch Grand Prix last year. Overall, teams succeed with these requests only rarely — the success rate stands at about 28%.
