Tombazis: F1 safety-net engine solution is a worthwhile goal

Comment of the day

Should BYD invest in building its own Formula 1 team like Cadillac, or take a lower-cost route similar to Alfa Romeo’s recent partnership with Sauber?

If I were BYD I’d pursue the same route Alfa Romeo enjoyed with Sauber. Fans and broadcasters still referred to the cars as ‘Alfas’, it cost them a relatively modest amount—around £20m per season—and in return they received global media exposure across 23 race weekends a year and an easy exit when needed, without the dilution or embarrassment that other manufacturers have experienced.
