Monaco GP stewards to hear Mercedes’ review request on Saturday

The stewards at the Monaco Grand Prix will hold a second Right of Review hearing on Saturday after Mercedes challenged the decision that overturned Pierre Gasly’s penalties. The team has lodged a petition following the race, seeking a review of the stewards’ earlier ruling that cancelled two five-second pit-lane speeding penalties issued to Gasly.

Race officials had promoted Gasly to third place after accepting that the timing system had mismeasured the pit lane and therefore overestimated his speed. The stewards concluded the timekeepers’ measurements were incorrect for at least some drivers, which led to the annulment of Gasly’s penalties.

George Russell, driving for Mercedes, was also given a penalty for pit-lane speeding during the race. Unlike Gasly, Russell completed a pit stop and should have served his penalty during that stop, so the stewards imposed a drive-through penalty on him. He was required to serve that drive-through within three laps, which dropped him out of the points positions on the day.

Mercedes has requested a Right of Review under Article 14.1.1 of the FIA International Sporting Code, arguing there is new evidence relevant to the decision recorded in Documents 99 that may affect the outcome for Car 10. The stewards have scheduled a virtual hearing for Saturday at 09:00 CEST to determine whether Mercedes’ petition is admissible and whether it presents “significant and relevant new element[s]” that were not available at the time of the original decision.

The hearing will be split into two parts. The first part will decide whether the petition is admissible. If the stewards find it admissible, they will then assess whether Mercedes has produced compelling new evidence that could reasonably change the decision. If the stewards determine such evidence does exist, a second part of the hearing will be convened—most likely shortly after the first—to reconsider the original ruling in light of that new material. Any other party with a legitimate interest in the outcome may request permission to appear at the hearing.

Separately, McLaren has confirmed it will appeal the cancellation of Gasly’s penalties, taking its own path through the appeals process. That challenge means the outcome of the stewards’ review could have further consequences for the final classification of the Monaco Grand Prix.

The stewards received a petition for Review under Article 14.1.1 of the FIA International Sporting Code from Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team on Friday 12th June 2026 in respect of the decision of the Stewards of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, Documents 99, breach of Article B1.6.3a of the FIA F1 Regulations in relation to Car 10.

The team representative is required to report to the stewards on Saturday 20th June 2026, at 09:00 CEST in relation to the above. The hearing will be held virtually via video conference.

The upcoming virtual hearing will focus on whether Mercedes can establish that the timing measurement error identified by the stewards affected Russell’s penalty in a way that justifies reopening the case. If the review proceeds to the second stage, the stewards will re-examine the technical and timing evidence to decide whether the original decision should be changed.

For fans and teams alike, the Right of Review process is a key part of the sport’s regulatory framework: it allows teams to bring forward genuinely new and relevant evidence that could alter a race result, while also ensuring that decisions are final unless there is a sound reason to revisit them. The outcome of this request will determine whether the Monaco Grand Prix classifications remain as published or are changed once more following the stewards’ reconsideration.
