The Ferrari driver corrected an oversteer snap through Luco, the left-handed second corner, and despite the error managed to advance into Q2. He was unable to progress to Q3, however, meaning he missed the final session for the fifth consecutive race.

“Obviously I’m not happy,” Vettel said after qualifying. “I had a mistake in Q1 and with that mistake I was still able to go through, so I was quite lucky.

“After that we didn’t really make a big step forward. We’ll review it and see what we can do tomorrow.”

Vettel has frequently been out-qualified this season by team mate Charles Leclerc. Leclerc secured fifth on the grid for Sunday’s race while Vettel could only manage 14th.

“It’s not quite working my way yet,” Vettel added. “I’m trying to improve step by step and I think today was another small step.

“Tomorrow will be difficult starting so far back; it will be hard to show our true race pace. We will still do our best.”
