HWA has taken over the entry formerly run by Arden, the team Markelov drove for late last season when he stepped in following the death of Anthoine Hubert.
Markelov made his debut in the series in 2014 when it was still known as GP2 and has started 114 races at this level. A mainstay of the Russian Time line-up for many seasons, he recorded his first win for that team in Monaco in 2016.
In 2017, after the championship had been rebranded as Formula 2, he accumulated five race victories and finished the year as championship runner-up to Charles Leclerc. The following season he dropped to fifth in the standings but still added three wins to his record.
At the start of 2019 Markelov initially found himself without a full-time seat, but he later returned as a substitute driver for Anthoine Hubert and for Jordan King at MP Motorsport. He has also competed in Japanese Super Formula during the year.
On joining HWA, Markelov expressed confidence their existing relationship would help the team find a strong footing. “I think we will gel quickly,” he said. “HWA has a vast wealth of motorsport experience, from which I am sure I will benefit.”
HWA CEO Ulrich Fritz praised Markelov as an excellent signing for the team’s first independent season in Formula 2. “He has a great deal of experience at this level. His eight race wins speak for themselves. His expertise as a driver will help make our introduction to the series easier. I am pleased that we were able to secure his services.”
