There are many notable aspects to Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s breakthrough at the start of 2026.

Antonelli has become only the third driver in Formula 1 history to win his first three grands prix consecutively, matching Mika Hakkinen and Damon Hill. He also achieved the rare feat of taking pole and winning each of those first three races.
Perhaps most striking is that he managed those victories despite losing positions off the line in all six of his starts this year, including both sprint events. McLaren interrupted Mercedes’ Saturday dominance, but Antonelli reasserted Mercedes’ superiority in the main race. If he wins again in Canada in two weeks he will be the first driver ever to win their opening four grands prix in succession.
The fifth running of the Miami Grand Prix delivered Mercedes’ first victory at the event. With the Miami result, Mercedes have now won at every circuit on the 2026 F1 calendar except Madring, which will host the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time in September:

Lando Norris, who took his maiden F1 victory in Miami two years earlier, finished second for the second consecutive year. With a one-two in the sprint and a double podium in the grand prix, McLaren scored the most team points across the weekend and earned more points than in the previous three rounds combined. That haul moves them to within 16 points of Ferrari in the battle for second place in the constructors’ standings.
When the season began, Miami was due to mark McLaren’s 1,000th grand prix start. The cancellation of two April rounds and the absence of their drivers from the Chinese Grand Prix postponed those celebrations, although the milestone was noted in several outlets in the build-up to the race.
George Russell extended his streak to 20 consecutive points finishes, his best run to date; no other current driver has a double-digit run of points scores this season.
Despite serving a five-second time penalty, Max Verstappen secured his first top-five result of the year. Charles Leclerc’s late spin ended his run of top-four finishes and, with a 20-second penalty applied, dropped him to eighth.
That promoted Franco Colapinto to a career-best seventh place, finishing behind Lewis Hamilton. Those extra two points helped Alpine surpass their total of 22 points from last year within the first four rounds of 2026. It is their best points return over the opening four races since 2020, the team’s last season under the Renault name.
Alexander Albon scored his first point of the season as Williams recorded their first double top-10 finish of 2026.

Neither of the American teams scored points this weekend. Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas finished last as he marked his 250th grand prix start.
Seven-times grand prix starter Hermano da Silva Ramos passed away the day after the race; he had celebrated his 100th birthday the previous December. John Rhodes, now 98, becomes the oldest living former F1 driver. Rhodes made his only World Championship start in the 1965 British Grand Prix, beginning 21st and last on the grid.
Antonelli dedicated his latest win to another driver recently lost. Alessandro Zanardi, also born in Bologna, raced in F1 across the early 1990s and briefly in 1999 before finding major success in CART IndyCar, where he was twice champion. Zanardi’s sole F1 points finish came with sixth place for Lotus at the 1993 Brazilian Grand Prix.
