Brendon Hartley and Pierre Gasly have both been confirmed to remain with Toro Rosso for the 2018 season, the team announced.
Team principal Franz Tost said Toro Rosso were “really happy to have Pierre and Brendon confirmed so early by Red Bull as our drivers for 2018.”
He added that in the latter part of the year both drivers demonstrated they were ready for Formula One, adapting quickly to the car, delivering strong performances and showing a consistent readiness for the challenge. “We have been truly impressed by their steep learning curves,” Tost said.
Toro Rosso started the season with Carlos Sainz Jnr and Daniil Kvyat. During the year Sainz moved to Renault on loan and Kvyat was released from his seat.
Gasly made his Toro Rosso debut in Malaysia five races ago, while Hartley joined two races later in the United States. Hartley was previously part of the Red Bull Junior Team earlier in his career before leaving the programme in 2010.
Hartley described the confirmation as “really amazing,” saying it was very satisfying to turn a surprise opportunity into a confirmed Formula One drive for 2018. “I couldn’t be happier,” he added.
Since joining Toro Rosso, Gasly has completed all four of his races, while Hartley faced power unit problems that sidelined him in two of his three starts.
For 2018 Toro Rosso will switch from Renault to Honda power units.
