In the captivating world of Formula 1, the promise of closer competition often accompanies significant rule changes. However, as the dust settled on the 2022 season, a recurring sentiment of disappointment emerged, particularly from a veteran like Aston Martin-bound Fernando Alonso, highlighting the persistent challenge of enabling more teams to contend for victory despite the revamped technical regulations. This comprehensive review delves into the key takeaways from the season, including a closer look at Alonso’s observations, the thrilling conclusion of the F1 Esports championship, and crucial updates from the F1 Manager game, alongside other notable motorsport developments.
The Enduring Challenge of F1 Competitiveness: Alonso’s Perspective on 2022 Regulations
Fernando Alonso Expresses Disappointment as 2022 Rules Fail to Bridge the Gap to F1’s Elite

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, a driver renowned for his candid observations and deep understanding of Formula 1, voiced considerable disappointment regarding the impact of the technical regulations introduced for the 2022 season. These sweeping changes were designed with the explicit aim of fostering tighter racing, reducing aerodynamic wake (or “dirty air”), and ultimately bringing the grid closer together. Yet, as the season unfolded, Alonso felt the revised rulebook fell short of its ambitious goals.
“It was a bit disappointing for everyone to realize that things haven’t changed dramatically,” he shared with Auto Motor und Sport. “There are at most two teams that can win races, as has been the case in recent years.” This statement encapsulates a frustration felt by many within the sport and among its dedicated fanbase: despite significant investment and strategic overhauls, the fundamental power dynamic at the front of the grid remained largely unaltered.
Alonso elaborated on the persistent disparity, stating, “The gap between the two or three top teams and the midfield is still too big. In 50% of the races we are one lap behind the winner. Therefore, we have not yet achieved the result that Formula 1 intended with the restart of the rules.” His comments underscore a critical issue: while the new regulations did lead to some spectacular on-track battles and enabled drivers to follow more closely, they did not fundamentally redistribute winning potential across the grid. The aspiration for a more level playing field, where a wider array of constructors could realistically challenge for podiums and victories, remains an elusive dream for many.
The 2022 season itself provided stark evidence of this dominance. Red Bull Racing secured an astonishing 17 victories out of the 22 races held, a testament to their exceptional car design and strategic execution. Ferrari’s initial burst of four wins in the first half of the season offered a glimmer of hope for a multi-team championship fight, but their challenge ultimately faded. Mercedes, after a challenging start adapting to the new ground-effect regulations, managed a single victory, which notably prevented Red Bull from achieving a complete sweep of the second half of the season. This concentration of power, as highlighted by Alonso, continues to be a central point of discussion and concern for the sport’s long-term health and appeal.
Lucas Blakeley Crowned F1 Esports Series Pro Champion in Thrilling Finale
The excitement of motorsport isn’t confined to the physical racetracks; it thrives vigorously in the digital realm. McLaren Shadow’s Lucas Blakeley emerged as the triumphant 2022 F1 Esports Series Pro Champion following a captivating 12th and final round of the season held at the virtual Yas Marina Circuit. This victory marks a significant milestone in Blakeley’s burgeoning career and underscores the growing prestige of esports within the global motorsport landscape.
Blakeley, who showcased exceptional skill and consistency throughout his fourth season in the championship – and his inaugural year with the McLaren Shadow team – secured his first coveted title by finishing fourth in the grand finale. His season was highlighted by an impressive four race victories, demonstrating his raw pace and strategic acumen. The climax of the F1 Esports season was a double celebration for McLaren, as the team also sealed the constructors’ championship, a testament to their robust driver lineup and competitive virtual machinery.
The final race itself was a spectacle of high-stakes competition. Red Bull’s championship contender, Frederik Rasmussen, delivered a commanding performance to win the final race, closely followed by Haas’s Thomas Ronhaar. Pole position winner Josh Idowu completed the podium in a commendable third place. However, all eyes were on Blakeley, whose crucial fourth-place finish was precisely what he needed to clinch the overall title, cementing his status as one of the elite sim racers in the world. The F1 Esports Series continues to captivate audiences, providing a platform for aspiring racers and thrilling entertainment for fans globally.
F1 Manager 2022 Game Unveils Comprehensive Online Driver Database
For fans who dream of stepping into the shoes of a Formula 1 team principal, the F1 Manager 2022 game offers an unparalleled immersive experience. Enhancing this realism, the game has now launched a sophisticated new online driver database. This invaluable resource provides detailed profiles for every single driver who has competed in Formula 1, Formula 2, and the FIA Formula 3 championship during the current year. This expansion caters to the meticulous nature of motorsport strategists, both real and virtual.
While the core F1 driver ratings within the game remain consistent with their initial launch values, the addition of this expansive database significantly elevates the strategic depth available to players. Game developer Frontier highlighted that this feature empowers players to “identify future stars of the sport or compare individual ratings to maximise the opportunity for points.” This means budding team principals can now delve into a wealth of information to make more informed decisions about their team’s future talent pool.
Frontier further explained the dynamic nature of these ratings: “All ratings in the driver database are reflective of those at the start of a new game in F1 Manager 2022 and develop throughout a driver’s career as they earn experience from completing sessions on track.” This crucial detail allows for realistic player engagement, as their strategic choices directly influence a driver’s progression. It enables aspiring team principals to make well-researched decisions for their dream driver line-ups right from the commencement of their careers. However, the game retains a layer of realism by requiring players to “still need to use scouts to discover the driver’s interest in joining the team and gain information on their current contract.” This ensures that securing top talent remains a challenging and rewarding aspect of the game.
“Once they’ve done their research, they can step into the [game’s] paddock themselves and take their team to the top step of the podium as they compete for glory in the world’s most prestigious motorsport.” The F1 Manager 2022 driver database is more than just a list of names; it’s a strategic tool designed to deepen player immersion, allowing for unparalleled insight into the complex world of driver management and team development, ultimately enhancing the pursuit of virtual Formula 1 glory.

Community Voice: Dissecting Sergio Perez’s 2022 F1 Season Performance
Our ongoing driver rankings for the 2022 F1 season have now progressed into the top ten, sparking lively debate among our readership. Securing ninth place on our list is Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who concluded the championship in an impressive third position overall. The question on many fans’ minds, and indeed the central theme of our ‘Comment of the Day,’ is whether this ranking accurately reflects his season’s performance.
He had easily the fastest car on the grid, sometimes by a significant margin and yet at times was struggling to finish above cars two to five tenths slower per lap. I’d be slightly torn whether he was better than Sainz but I think the fewer accidents probably mean he did pip him.
Slowmo
The comment from ‘Slowmo’ perfectly encapsulates the nuanced discussion surrounding Perez’s 2022 campaign. While he drove for Red Bull, undeniably possessing the most dominant car on the grid for much of the season, his consistency and raw pace relative to teammate Max Verstappen often came under scrutiny. The observation that Perez, at times, struggled to maintain a significant advantage over cars that were demonstrably slower highlights the high expectations placed upon a driver in top machinery. The comparison to Carlos Sainz is also telling, as both drivers found themselves in the ‘second driver’ role for front-running teams. ‘Slowmo’s’ ultimate decision to place Perez ahead of Sainz, primarily due to “fewer accidents,” points to the critical factor of reliability and avoiding costly mistakes in a championship fight. This fan insight underscores the complexity of evaluating driver performance, where raw speed must be balanced against consistency, race craft, and minimizing errors, especially when equipped with a championship-contending car.
Happy Birthday to Our Motorsport Community Members!
A special shout-out and warmest wishes go out today to Daniel Hayes, Kate, and Bradaus! We hope you have a fantastic day celebrating.
