Silver Arrows radio show episode three – Montreal unlocked (Mercedes)

Deputy team principal Bradley Lord said a sudden ERS shutdown entering turn eight caused significant damage. The module was removed and sent back to the UK for extensive safety checks and analysis. It will be several months before the hardware returns while the team examines the data to prevent future failures.

Fornaroli turns laps in the Lone Star State (McLaren)

Leonardo Fornaroli drove McLaren’s 2023 challenger with the Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) team at the Circuit of the Americas. It was his first outing at COTA, where he completed 77 laps (425 km) across two days of running.

Injured Newgarden toughing it out on Detroit’s streets (Racer)

Despite using crutches and wearing a walking boot off the track, Josef Newgarden pushed his Penske car hard over the bumpy Detroit street circuit. He managed to qualify 21st in a field of 25 while coping with a physically demanding layout that tests both car and driver.

  • Born today in 1946: Ron Dennis, former McLaren boss who led the team through its most successful years with drivers such as Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.
  • Born today in 1959: Martin Brundle, who won the 1988 World Sports-Prototype championship and the 1990 Le Mans 24 Hours, and recorded nine podiums in Formula 1.
  • Forty years ago: Hans Stuck, Derek Bell and Al Holbert won the Le Mans 24 Hours for Porsche. The race was marred by the fatal crash of Jo Gartner during the event.
  • Forty years ago: Bobby Rahal took an emotional Indianapolis 500 victory for Truesports, a result shadowed by the illness and subsequent death of team founder Jim Trueman shortly after the race.
