Mercedes: Race Setup Made the Car Slightly Slower — Full Roundup

Welcome to Sunday’s edition of the RaceFans round-up.

Comment of the day

The television direction did not do justice to one of Formula 1’s livelier sprint races, says MikeD:

For once it was an exciting sprint – shame the coverage wasn’t up to the task.

We never saw a replay of George and Kimi in turn eight. We missed significant chunks of action behind the lead three, between Piastri, Hamilton and Leclerc. Many incidents were reviewed and penalised that we simply never saw.

This year, the camerawork seems to prioritise fast cuts and heavily zoomed clips, which creates a movie-trailer-like feel to the broadcast. I no longer feel ‘in’ the race; I’m just shown moments and told what happened. It takes away from the experience.

Sprint success and Sunday front-row lock-out in Montreal (Mercedes)

Andrew Shovlin: We made small adjustments before main qualifying, anticipating cooler or possibly wet conditions. The car proved trickier to balance than yesterday, but both drivers produced strong final laps and we secured another front-row lock-out. It felt like we’d made things harder for ourselves and perhaps slowed the car a touch, but there are no pictures on the timing screen — we’ll lead the field away on Sunday.

Oliver Bearman: We found better corner balance in qualifying and, with growing confidence, we’re now committing to entries and locking the front wheels. This weekend exposed issues we hadn’t addressed earlier; now we’re beginning to uncover them.

Not only has George Russell led a Mercedes front row lock-out for the second time this weekend but the gap between him and Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been the same each time: 0.068 seconds. #F1 #CanadianGP #RaceFans

If Wolff thought Antonelli’s messages were too much, he’d never cope with Verstappen in his team. #F1 #CanadianGP #RaceFans
