Madring Promoters Working Nights to Complete Track: Roundup

Welcome to Wednesday’s RaceFans round-up, bringing you today’s standout comment, key headlines from across motorsport, social updates and a glance back at a moment in racing history.

Comment of the day

Alan D explains why McLaren’s decision to appeal the stewards’ reversal of Pierre Gasly’s penalty makes sense:

“Our decision to appeal is not directed at any competitor. Rather, it reflects our belief that the championship benefits from regulations that are applied consistently, transparently and fairly to all participants.”

Alan adds that the appeal is about protecting consistent application of rules rather than targeting a rival. He notes that, at the time of the original ruling, drivers make tactical decisions based on the stewards’ determinations during the race. For example, Oscar Piastri would have raced under the belief that he no longer needed to pass Gasly because the ruling then indicated Gasly was out of position, meaning Piastri only had to remain within five seconds. Once a race concludes, drivers cannot retroactively change their on-track choices to reflect a later ruling.
