The 41-year-old claimed the 106th victory of his career at the Circuit de Catalunya today. That result made him the seventh-oldest winner in World Championship history. To move higher on the list would require many more seasons of racing, but today’s win already marks a notable milestone in his long career.
The last driver older than Hamilton to win a World Championship race was three-time champion Jack Brabham. Brabham took victory in the opening round of the 1970 season at Kyalami, South Africa, driving for his own team, and retired from racing at the end of that year.
Hamilton is the first driver to win a Grand Prix in their fifth decade since Nigel Mansell won the 1994 season finale at Adelaide. With this result he becomes the 10th different driver to record a World Championship victory after turning 40.
Only one driver has won a World Championship race in their fifties. Luigi Fagioli remains the record-holder: he was 53 when he shared victory with Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1951 French Grand Prix at Reims, a race that stands apart in the sport’s history.
