A high chance of thunderstorms is forecast for Sunday after two warm, dry days at the Miami International Autodrome.

“There is a meeting later on with the FIA to double-check the scenario for Sunday because apparently it’s looking really bad,” said Cadillac’s Sergio Perez. “We’ll see if there are any changes on the schedule for the weekend.”

Local forecasts place the risk of thunderstorms on Sunday as high as 85%. The main concern is not just the likelihood of storms, but the potential intensity and volume of rain.

Because storms are expected later in the day, F1 could bring the grand prix start time forward. A similar decision was taken at the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos to avoid heavy rain. The Miami Grand Prix is currently scheduled to start at 4pm local time.

Last year the sprint race in Miami was delayed by heavy rain before the start, and Charles Leclerc crashed during an installation lap as conditions deteriorated.

Many drivers have little experience with the latest cars in wet conditions; no rain is forecast before the grand prix. “I don’t think many of us have driven these cars in the rain before,” said Oscar Piastri, “maybe a couple of people in Barcelona at the shakedown [test].

“But I think they’re going to be challenging cars to drive in the rain just because of some of the quirks that they have. Obviously the weather, normally if it rains in Miami it does it properly, so we’ll wait and see. It’ll be interesting one way or another.”
