Poll: Is It Time for Lewis Hamilton to Retire from F1?

How much longer should Lewis Hamilton continue chasing an eighth world championship after the title narrowly and controversially eluded him almost five years ago?

Now 41, Hamilton has seen limited success since that key moment. After win-less seasons in 2022 and 2023 he claimed two victories in 2024, although one came after his team mate was disqualified.

His move to Ferrari last year brought fresh expectations but little immediate reward: new team mate Charles Leclerc took the team’s podiums while Hamilton publicly expressed frustration with his form.

That made the 2026 season an important test. Would Ferrari finally provide a car that suited Hamilton? Would the newer regulations and car dynamics suit him better than the ground-effect era of 2022–25?

The early signs have been more positive: Hamilton secured his first podium with Ferrari and has closed the pace gap to Leclerc at times.

But is that enough for a driver with seven world championships and 105 Grand Prix wins? Hamilton’s difficult spell at Ferrari followed by a resurgence at Mercedes has drawn comparisons to Michael Schumacher, the only other seven-time champion, who endured three largely unproductive years at Mercedes before retiring from F1 at 43.

Hamilton is not the oldest driver on the grid — Fernando Alonso turns 45 in July — but unlike Alonso, Hamilton has raced continuously in Formula 1 since his debut. Has the moment come for him to consider retirement?

For

The prospect of Hamilton winning an eighth title by moving to Ferrari always looked uncertain. Ferrari has never lacked talent, yet no driver has claimed a championship with them since Hamilton’s debut year.

The 2026 rules change offered Ferrari a chance to regain the top spot, but Mercedes capitalised more effectively. Had Hamilton stayed at Mercedes, he might have been better placed to chase that elusive eighth title. With Red Bull and McLaren also strengthening, the path to a championship at Ferrari seems unlikely even if Hamilton manages to out-pace Leclerc, which so far he has not consistently done.

Against

It is tempting to attribute Hamilton’s recent struggles to a loss of motivation after Abu Dhabi 2021, but a more concrete explanation is his dislike of the ground-effect cars and Mercedes’ difficulty producing a competitive package under those regulations.

Adjusting to Ferrari’s methods and a new car was always going to take time, and this season’s performances suggest the Hamilton familiar to fans is returning. Alonso has demonstrated that drivers in their forties can remain competitive in F1, and Hamilton could follow that example by continuing to race.

I say

This is one of those rare topics where I don’t have a firm view either way.

If Hamilton chooses to keep racing, I hope he does so because he genuinely believes he can be competitive rather than simply maintaining his public profile. To date, I’m not convinced that motivation has been fully present, and it’s unclear how long a driver used to regular success will tolerate a prolonged period without it.

He remains a marquee figure and an inspiration to many, so I hope he carries on. Equally, given the current landscape of Formula 1, I would not be surprised if he decided to pursue other interests outside the sport.
