Earlier in the season, it would have been hard to imagine a pole-winning Mercedes beating the car starting second to the first corner in a 565-metre dash when both were on the same tyre compound.

If an SF-6 lined up on a tyre one compound softer than the Mercedes, the gap seemed decisive: Ferrari drivers were regularly launching from the second row to the lead in the early rounds of the season.

But Mercedes’ standing starts have clearly improved in recent months. George Russell launched his medium-shod W17 superbly and out-accelerated Lewis Hamilton into one of the longest runs to Turn 1 on the calendar, despite Hamilton being on soft tyres.
There was an important difference beyond the start: Russell’s medium set was new while Hamilton’s softs were worn. At the heat- and tyre-toughing Circuit de Catalunya, that gave Russell the edge initially.
However, that advantage came with a strategic cost. Both drivers began the weekend with the same stock of new tyres—two sets of hards and one medium—but Russell quickly used his medium and was left with only new hards. Hamilton still had all three fresh sets available.
That inventory allowed Hamilton to adopt a three‑stop plan and push hard. When Hamilton made his first pit stop after 11 laps, Russell immediately recognised the strategy shift and informed his team that Hamilton was on a three‑stop race.
A three‑stop for Mercedes would have required running a used set of softs at some stage, a risky option at Catalunya. To make a two‑stop work optimally they would have needed to keep their first stint beyond 12 laps—likely at the cost of track position to Hamilton. Mercedes tried a compromise: stick with two stops but stop early to preserve track position and run in clean air. Hamilton countered by taking his second stop as early as lap 27 and switching to the medium set he had saved at the start.
With his strategy already compromised, Russell then faced pressure from his teammate. By lap 31 Hamilton was consistently lapping in the 1’20s, more than two seconds per lap quicker than Russell as the latter began defending from Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
The second round of stops separated the Mercedes drivers again, but the gaps should have been larger. Antonelli had committed a fourth track limits breach roughly 12 minutes before his second pit stop, an infringement that warranted an automatic five‑second time penalty. The stewards did not spot the breach in time—possibly because the incidents all occurred at turn 10—and the penalty was only announced after the race. Had the penalty been applied during the race, Antonelli would likely have rejoined behind Lando Norris’s McLaren.
Soon after the Mercedes pit cycle, Aston Martin asked Fernando Alonso to stop his car on track, bringing out a Virtual Safety Car. The VSC window coincided with the Mercedes rejoin and allowed Hamilton to emerge ahead of Russell.
After Mercedes suffered its first grand prix defeat of the year, team principal Toto Wolff said the team might consider instructing their drivers not to fight each other in future races to avoid losing ground to rivals. That approach might have made a small difference here—potentially allowing Hamilton to come out from the pits during the VSC just behind Antonelli—but whether the two Mercedes could have contained Antonelli’s pace is uncertain, especially if his penalty had been applied in time and he had only one W17 to overtake.
